The increasing diversity of our nation’s classrooms has challenged educators to examine culture’s role in schools and adopt effective multicultural teaching practices to enhance learning outcomes for all students. Little extant research focuses specifically on multicultural teaching practices. This paper will present findings from a mixed-methods study with 45 elementary teachers to measure definitions of culture, multicultural practices they would likely utilize in the classroom, and the factors associated with use of these practices. Barriers to effective multicultural teaching practices and directions for future research will be discussed.
