Global Pedagogies: Learning From Immigrant Educators About Teaching Immigrant Youth

Abstract

While racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity is on the rise in America’s public schools, the overwhelming majority of teachers are White. An exception to the trend in student and teacher demographics is found in community-based out of school time (OST) and after-school spaces, where educators reflect the racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the youth participants. What can we learn from immigrant educators about meeting the needs of English language learners, students of color, and immigrant students? My research focuses on the cultural ways of knowing and pedagogical practices of immigrant educators in after-school programs and out of school time activities.
