Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Liberty Salon N

Abstract

In this presentation we utilize mixed media approach including screen footage, music-cultural artifacts and -audience participation to translate conceptual global multicultural education into K-12 instructional strategies that highlight examples of Indigenous students taking agentive action to co-construct the curriculum with their teacher. Storytelling, including cultural artifacts, is presented as a viable tool of teaching and learning rooted in the framework of socio-cultural theory and post-colonial studies. Woven throughout our presentation is the specific assertion that critical consciousness learning experiences should take place within the context of guided practice, authentic examples, and an inclusive environment that incorporates children’s funds of knowledge.
