Black and International: Inside the Experiences of Male Nigerian Collegians in the United States

Abstract

One group situated within the larger ethos of the international student population that has received less attention is Black male internationals. Literature tending broadly to Black males in higher education is vast; however, there is less empirical research specifically addressing Black male internationals, namely Nigerian males. Nigeria sends the highest number of African students to the United States, and Nigerians have the highest degree attainment amongst all ethnic group in the U.S. Despite this achievement African international students continue to receive less attention and consequently are understudied because of their absorption into the Black American or African American category. This study discusses three main findings on male Nigerian collegians: international ties, parents’ educational level, and socioeconomic jumping.
