Protecting Place and Promoting Sustainability in a Globalized Economy: A Costa Rican Case Study

Tue, April 12, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 155

Abstract

This qualitative study examines environmental education for sustainability in the Costa Rican elementary education system. Using critical discourse analysis the study evaluates how environmental education is integrated into the social studies, science, and English language curriculum, using a metric developed by Warner & Elser (2015). The metric measures sustainable education by focusing on the extent that curriculum includes environment health, population wellness, and economic efficiency. The study found that environmental education is substantially integrated throughout the Costa Rican curriculum, but lacks a focus on solution-based learning and the economics of environmental preservation.
