Teachers' View on Harnessing "LearningVillages" in Collaborative Social Inquiry Learning

Tue, April 12, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

"LearningVillages" (LV) is an online gamified learning environment which we have developed to support primary students in conducting collaborative social inquiry learning. In LV, every village represents different societal issues. To shape the development of a village, students have to conduct collaborative inquiry into the issue through two-tier discourse (village-level and house-level), like a form of multi-player role-play gaming. This paper reports on our study in which we investigated 72 primary teachers' concerns about harnessing LV in their teaching practice. Based on the findings, we can formulate precise interventions for assisting teachers' adoption of LV in schools. This study also unfolded the potential challenges of introducing online gamified learning into schooling, providing the field with a useful reference.
