Considerable research exists on using online surveys in the school setting, but scarce research exists about how researchers have used dynamic media to improve online surveys, particularly in K-12 settings. This paper demonstrates how a research team improved online surveys through the use of more dynamic questions for a school-wide leadership pilot program for students in lower, middle, and upper school in North Carolina. The process included developing the survey questions, conducting cognitive lab interviews on a piloting site visit, reporting the pilot findings to myriad stakeholder groups, and incorporating the findings for online survey improvement. This paper concludes with the important considerations and tips for researchers who want to successfully use myriad media and survey question types.
