Results of a multi-site comparative case study of Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) public high school instructors of Social Studies. Teacher interviews informed how eight teachers' background, experiences, and training enlightened their beliefs about citizenship education and their students’ cultural and linguistic diversity. Moreover, they reflected on their identities as “good citizens” in conjunction with being “good instructors”, how they decided to use the disciplinary content to teach toward English proficiency as well as civic mindedness, and their incorporation of their students’ diversity into their socially responsive pedagogy. Instructors discussed critical experiences that influenced their beliefs about citizenship, multiculturalism, and language learning which can enlighten teacher preparation and practice.
