Lack of New Teacher Induction and Mentorship by States and the Link to High Attrition

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 A

Abstract

Teacher attrition rates are on the rise. Induction programs help retain teachers, strengthen attitudes towards the profession, and improve instruction for students. With research recommending induction and mentorship, currently 20% of states implement such programs. There is a void in education, a margin between the theories learned and implementation in a working classroom. The purpose of this research is to highlight the importance of high quality mentorship and induction for new teachers and the lack of representation by states. By developing a metric to measure state's ability to prepare teachers, the results highlighted a deficit in terms of supporting new teachers with mentors, standards for mentors, and if an induction program is in place.
