The Intergenerational Transmission of Math Anxiety

Abstract

This study investigated the intergenerational transmission of math anxiety in a sample of 103 parent-child dyads. Path analytic results showed that parental math anxiety was a significant positive predictor of child’s math anxiety. Among others, the findings also showed that parental math anxiety significantly predicted their perception of their child’s math ability, which, in turn, predicted the child’s own perception of ability, which, further, predicted the child’s math anxiety. The findings of this study contribute to the emerging literature on adult-to-child transmission of math attitudes in general and math anxiety in particular.
