This paper draws on experiences from teaching an undergraduate elective on arts-based research. The authors use this course as an ongoing field site for exploring two main questions. First, we ask how an ABR curriculum is supported by a learning-by-doing pedagogical approach; and second, we review how doing ABR with our students informs our understanding of what ABR is, pushing the boundaries of the field. Finally, the paper reflects on how ABR can be activated to document learning, opening up new possibilities for assessment in the Fine Arts classroom.
