The purpose of this study is twofold. First, this study introduces the concept of community equity literacy (CEL) and explains why it is essential for school leaders to develop this type of literacy. Second, this study investigates the growth of aspiring principals’ CEL development around its five constructs. To do so, this study employs the same pre and post survey to assess participants’ CEL before and after they conducted a community-based equity audit and participated in a semester-long course on school-community relations. Importantly, I define CEL as a form of practical knowledge and consciousness that school leaders can use to guide their actions when working with and in urban community settings.
