Educational research that incorporates geographic information systems (GIS) has experienced exponential growth within the last 30 years. However, the use of GIS within a mixed methods framework has not experienced the same growth. This paper argues that GIS is an effective tool for mixed methods researchers both because of the versatility of GIS analysis, as well as the pragmatic framework of mixed methods. After introducing major types of GIS tools, I will examine the current usage of GIS within educational mixed methods research, focusing on two example papers. Finally, I will discuss the value of GIS for mixed methods studies, particularly for education research directed at public engagement.
