Abstract

Enrollments in online education have been increasing at a faster rate than in face-to-face education at college level. There is a growing need for tools, techniques, and pedagogies to accommodate different levels of learners and subject areas. In this study, we examined whether the usability of e-learning systems impacts learner motivation and perceived learning. 215 undergraduate students were surveyed regarding how easy they find the e-learning system to use, their motivation, and perceived learning. Results of the structural equation modeling analysis indicate that the easier learners find the system to use, the more motivated they are to use it. In addition, higher motivation leads to higher perceived learning. There was no direct effect of system usability on perceived learning.
