Boys are significantly disengaged from traditional school settings. A “one-size fits all” approach to education fails to address significant nuances of learner needs (Reigeluth & Duffy, 2008). Traditionally, boys have shown an affinity towards video game play. Although boys and girls tend to game at roughly the same rate, social-cultural factors lead boys to participate in unique ways (Jenkins, 1998). This qualitative study investigates commercial gaming environments through the voices of boys. The current study reports on a multiphase investigation that shows how commercial games can align with Common Core State Standards through literacy. Findings suggest that particular alignment can be shown through critical reading and craft and structure components of the literacy standards (NGA & CCSSO, 2015).
