This study examines student perceptions of digital badges when embedded within a college course. Students in 5 sections of an undergraduate course were awarded three types of badges in order to motivate them, recognize their status, and recognize achievement. Findings show a mixed reaction to badges, with some students expressing disinterest but others indicating that badges motivate them to do more work and better work. Students who have disinterest are likely to ignore badges, whereas students who are motivated by them will strive to earn badges and feel good about themselves when they have earned badges.
