Using a Spanish-speaking dual language learner (DLL) sample as well as an English sample of children spanning from pre-K to grade 3, the present study looks at the influence of home literacy environment (HLE) and parental reading beliefs on vocabulary development. Specifically, the current study (1) examines the development in English vocabulary in both samples, (2) since variation in vocabulary is expected in pre-K as well as in vocabulary growth, HLE and parental beliefs are used to explain the vocabulary variability at both the starting point (pre-K) and rate of growth, and (3) comparisons of the influence of HLE and parental reading beliefs on vocabulary development between the DLL and English samples will be discussed.
