Service-Learning as a Means for Changing Perceptions of Disability

Mon, April 11, 10:00 to 11:30am, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 8

Abstract

When built into existing coursework in preservice teacher education programs, service learning can provide opportunities to change teacher candidates’ mindsets related to individuals with disabilities outside of the constraints of traditional field placement experiences. This study draws upon a Disability Studies in Education framework and explains the context and implementation of a service learning project in an preservice teacher education program. The presentation will describe the effect of the service learning on teacher candidates’ perceptions of individuals with disabilities and their self-efficacy in relation to their perceived ability to work with individuals with disabilities.
