This study examined whether the different class environments (i.e., online environment, face-ot-face environment) and the different types of web-based tools (i.e., text-based, visual tool) influence students’ intrinsic motivation and sense of community in class environments. Forty-six students participated in the study through graduate-level online and face-to-face courses. The results showed that the students who used text-based tool in online environments experienced greater intrinsic motivation and sense of community compared to those that used visual tools. On the other hand, the students who used the visual tool in face-to-face environments indicated higher intrinsic motivation and sense of community. The results showed that class environments and types of tools need to be taken into consideration to elicit motivation and sense of community.
