Abstract

This study seeks to build on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, and focuses on how a mechanism to provide quality feedback to students as a key to the assessment of student learning in an online college targeting adult learners. More specifically, this study seeks to explore the use of meta-criteria rubrics, rubrics that focus on shared skills and knowledge across different content areas, and its effects on student learning and achievement. We further explore students’, instructors’ and program directors’ satisfaction and perceptions regarding the usefulness of these rubrics, as well as the efficacy of their development and implementation. Implications of the significance of the meta-criteria rubric system to a more general population are discussed.
