Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning in STEM Domains: An Exploratory Synthesis

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Given the recent national focus on STEM education, we set out to understand CSCL outcomes in STEM domains by conducting a meta-synthesis of CSCL literature from 2011-2014. We screened over 1,000 articles from key journals and online databases. 295 papers met our criteria. A latent class analysis (LCA) was used to create four distinct clusters around pedagogy, technology, and collaboration. We sampled “best fit” papers from two of the most coherent clusters. We found certain combinations of pedagogy, technology, and collaboration were common and effective. However, these are preliminary findings; further analysis may lead to better understanding under which circumstances lead to CSCL best practices.
