Promoting Global Education in the United States: Discourses of Diverse Policy Entrepreneurs

Abstract

Global education is one way of teaching that is aimed at preparing students to successfully live as global citizens in an interconnected world. A broad coalition of policy entrepreneurs are advocating for K-12 educators in the United States to infuse global education into the curriculum, yet frame it as a solution for different problems arising from globalization. This study used political discourse analysis to examine the current dominant discourses evoked by global education policy entrepreneurs advocating on a national level for global education policy in the United States, and how discourse frequency compared across different policy entrepreneur types. Analysis of 267 documents revealed that cosmopolitan, neoliberal, and nationalist discourses were utilized most frequently, but discourses varied by policy entrepreneur.
