Public Scholars Using Research to Educate Politicians: Lessons for Those Who Want to Engage

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section A

Abstract

For decades, university based education scholars have documented a gap between recommendations produced by university-based education scholars and the evidence that politicians’ use when deciding which educational policies to implement. This study seeks to address this problem by identifying university-based education scholars who are demonstrably successful at engaging with politicians with the explicit goal of getting scholarly research to be used for decision-making purposes. As a result of the findings from this study, I offer suggestions for steps scholars can take if they aspire to engage in public scholarship and want to see research used by politicians.
