Although most workplace learning occurs informally, the focus within organizations is often on formal interventions, such as training. Additionally, instructional design and performance improvement (ID/PI) practitioners support professionals’ learning and performance needs. Given that the majority of learning among employees is more informal than formal, and also that ID/PI professionals support those employees, an interesting connection between ID/PI and informal workplace learning appears.
This intersection of ID/PI and informal learning has not been widely addressed by researchers, who concentrate on ID/PI practitioners’ informal learning. Instead, this presentation will report on a research study that examined how ID/PI practitioners utilize informal learning strategies to support clients. Results may have implications for researchers of informal workplace learning and managers of ID/PI teams.
