A lack of culturally relevant content in schools has been cited as one cause for the lower reading engagement of minority students, which in turn negatively affect their reading achievement. However, few studies have empirically tested how reading culturally relevant texts influence reading motivation and comprehension. This study used structural equation modeling to investigate how cultural relevance, perceived task-value, and dispositional reading motivation interact to predict reading comprehension. Results suggested that task was a full mediator of the relationship between cultural relevance and reading comprehension. Task value was also found to be a partial mediator of dispositional reading motivation in its influence on reading comprehension.
