Learning Mechanisms Drawn Upon by Leadership Coaches in the Development of Aspiring Principals

Abstract

The research being reported in this manuscript examines leadership coaching within the context of a leadership preparation program that: (a) is one of just a few principal preparation programs nationally to receive formal recognition as an exemplary principal preparation program by the University Council for Education Administration (UCEA), and (b) includes leadership coaching as a key program feature. This longitudinal study examined two cohorts of aspiring principals during each cohort’s 18-month preparation experience to investigate the following research questions: (a) What learning mechanisms employed by leadership coaches play a role in aspiring principal development? (b) What elements of leader development are cultivated through leadership coaching?
