Rebel Yell: White Supremacy and the Organizational Saga of the University of Mississippi

Abstract

In the fall of 1962, the University of Mississippi erupted in violence over forced integration by the federal government. What are the historical roots that led to such a reaction, which included continued retrenchment in the culture of White Supremacy? And, why is this culture so embedded within the saga of the university? This paper will explore the themes of White Supremacy within the institutional saga of the University of Mississippi, while connecting this culture to broader themes in American higher education. Emphasis on student publications will provide insight into the history of the institution, with a particular emphasis on the culture of White Supremacy and voices of resistance within the university.
