Examining the Efficacy of an Innovative Program to Improve Grades 4–8 STEM Teaching and Learning

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

This evaluation study investigated a project devised to improve Grades 4-8 STEM education by recruiting preservice elementary generalist teachers into a field-based fellowship program for mathematics and science instruction. Fellows in the program collaborate with university faculty on STEM research projects, work closely with mentor teachers, and complete workshops designed to prepare them for middle level mathematics and/or science certification exams. Employing a mixed-methods design, researchers examined the effects of the strategies employed to recruit and prepare candidates for mathematics and/or science classrooms in high need schools. Observation, interview, and program data were collected and analyzed. Findings indicate that, overall, the program has been somewhat successful in increasing quantity, quality, and diversity of STEM middle level teachers in South Texas.
