The following paper examines the relationship between critical literacy and democracy. On the one hand, it traces and characterizes the historic development of the former term by focusing on how it relates to the latter and to democratic principles in general terms.
On the other, the paper identifies the type of democracy with which critical literacy is often associated with. Finally, it sketches a conceptualization of critical literacy and puts into consideration some social, cultural, and political aspects for a further re-conceptualization of the relationship between these two terms.
