Toward Research on Recruitment and Retention of Teachers of Color in Rural and Suburban Contexts

Tue, April 12, 8:15 to 10:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 209 C

Abstract

The authors include a policy consultant and two academics working with Iowa districts to diversify their teacher workforces. They found the literature on recruiting and retaining teachers of color helpful but not sufficient for their work. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to call for more research on the recruitment and retention of teachers of color in rural and suburban schools. This research should center race in the analysis; consider how context may matter more, or differently, for teachers of color; and push beyond racial binaries that cannot provide us with the nuanced information we need in order to build effective strategies. In conclusion, we offer viable recommendations to address new areas of inquiry to advance research.
