There is limited data for engineering education in the early years. To address the challenges in STEM literacy instruction, we examined the impact of the integration of engineering applications and oral literacy instruction in ways that enable students to make meaning of science, engineering and text on the engagement of elementary English language learners (ELLs). Utilizing a single subject withdrawal design, we found that engineering-centered lessons produced stronger oral content skills and a heightened engagement in science, and engineering in real-world engineering applications. This pattern was observed across levels of ability and language proficiency. Implications will be discussed and evidence of content learning will be presented.
