This study addresses the gap between research and practice in special education with a focus on reading instructional practices. Utilizing a latent content analysis framework, the required coursework of 57 master’s level preparation programs (preservice and inservice) was analyzed to determine the number of reading-focused methods courses. All courses were coded utilizing an iterative process of coding, cross-coding, discussion, clarification, and resolution of differences. Initial data analysis indicates that preservice preparation programs include more reading-related coursework than inservice programs. Further analyses will compare top-ranked programs to randomly selected comparison programs in the same state, as well as compare required coursework across certification types. Implications for professional development and the reform of special education preparation are discussed in conclusion.
