Second language experts have attempted to operationalize the construct known as academic language, particularly in contexts where students are learning content through a second language. Recent research and theory have converged on the study of academic language drawing from functional linguistic theory. This research synthesis systematically reviews theoretical and research perspectives that examine the academic language development of students learning a second language. The results provide a better understanding of what practices are more effective in promoting academic language among emergent bilingual students and what research still needs to be conducted in the context of Spanish/English bilingual programs where students are learning academic content through two languages concurrently. Implications for instruction and future research are discussed.
