Digging Into Documents to Examine Social-Political Problems and Implications in the Curriculum

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom A

Abstract

I use various documents including biographies and oral histories, including personal narratives from the Cyprus Oral History Project, videos and photographs and other texts to examine how such documents educate and socialize us into our diverse democracies. I mainly examine how such documents can prompt examination of issues such as loss and silence experienced by people who lived through devastating life events. A major question is whether such documents can help promote and also become research data to inform civic participation, engagement and organized action. Besides loss and silence other significant issues can be raised and examined through various documents, including oral history research and testimonies, and such will be raised in this paper.
