In Chile, there are students selection processes that increase the existing social segregation in the educational system. This paper analyze the connexions between selection process and quality of school climate and school life in two Chilean public schools. This is a qualitative study with multiple cases. Interviews to students, principals, teachers, parents and school personnel, and participant observation was used for collecting data. For analysis data, a categorical content analysis was performed. The results show four mechanisms of selection: a) selection for new students; b) separated courses according to cognitive skills c) Expulsion for inadequate behaviors d) Expulsion for political participation. These mechanisms affect negatively the quality of the school climate, showing stigmatization, exclusion, discomfort and lack of social cohesion.
