Building trust is a significant piece of forming a positive relationship with youth in project-based programs, however, there is little empirical research on the set of actions leaders report intentionally engaging in to build interpersonal trust. The current study asks: “What types of practices do leaders of project-based programs report engaging in to form trusting relationships with youth?” A sample of 16 program leaders from eight project-based programs serving high-school-age youth were interviewed. Grounded theory analytic strategies identified four primary approaches to building trust: (a) Respecting and being genuine toward youth; (b) Building rapport with youth; (c) Being consistent and dependable; and (d) Occupying a nuanced adult role(s). Early analysis suggests these approaches should be considered as interconnected multidimensional trust-building.
