California is amongst six states (including Alaska, Arizona, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania) in the nation requiring all teachers, including general education mainstream teachers, to complete coursework in methods to instruct English language learners (ELL). Given these ongoing efforts affecting teacher education and preparation, it is important to determine whether these efforts are indeed effective. This work addresses the urgency for scholarship in the area of teacher readiness to meet the needs of ELLs. To this end, in this statewide survey study we aim to answer the following overarching question: How well are California teachers prepared to meet the needs of and work with ELL students? We conclude our work with salient findings that include both quantitative and qualitative reports.
