Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

This practitioner inquiry seeks to understand the relationship among local, global, and multimodal literacies within the context of a critical media-making workshop with Filipina/o American youth. This research examines how an inquiry community of Filipino youth in an ethnically/culturally based community center use critical multimodal media-making to represent their experiences and endeavors to understand the ways in which their literacy practices may connect to “historical, political, economic, and social processes” (Warriner, 2009, p. 163). Exploring the ways in which these transnational youth navigate local and global affiliations through multimodal literacies can provide empirical and theoretical insights that may bridge the global/local divide and illuminate the agentive literacy practices of youth who continually cross such borders
