The Role of Computer-Based Writing Instruction in the Accuracy of Students' Performance Monitoring

Abstract

The goal of computer-based writing instruction is to improve writing proficiency through an increase in the number of essays that students produce and, subsequently, the amount of feedback that they receive. In the current study, we investigated whether students increased their self-assessment accuracy over the course of an intervention with a writing strategy ITS, W-Pal. Results indicate that students were able to increase their monitoring accuracy from the W-Pal system, and that the combination of strategy instruction, game-based practice, and holistic essay-based practice led to equivalent gains in self-assessment accuracy compared to heavier doses of deliberate writing practice (offering twice the amount of system feedback).
