The Invisible Hand: "Rich" Transcription and Its Importance for Qualitative Research

Abstract

We explore the notion of rich transcription as a dynamic, relational alternative to the more traditional, mechanical approach to transcribing data. In rich transcription the transcriber became an interpreter and not merely a transcriber. The transcriber’s interpretations elevated transcribing to an intellectual activity and enriched the research. Rich transcription evolved as a relational phenomenon. The transcriber found himself “immersed” in the interview situation, and had a sense of coming to know its participants well, and recognized having emotional bonds with the “voices” on the tape. Where this relationship-like experience intertwined transcribing, it fostered a more perceptive observer and seasoned interpreter in a transcriber. Similarly, through weekly meetings, the transcriber and the researcher forged intellectual connections that enriched the research project.
