Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

With the increasing prevalence of mental health illness, understanding perceptions of students intending to enter the field is important. This study aims to use discourse analysis to examine how Psychology students perceive mental health, the role of helping professions, and how they have experienced academic and career preparation for this. The intention is that this study can be used to support improved instructional practices and career preparation through a better understanding of mental health literacy, changes to teaching of psychology, and promotion of positive discourse in higher education. Implications and recommendations for teaching practices and policies in Psychology will be emphasized as an important part of understanding and changing power imbalances and biases in mental health, and enacting systemic change.
