Calculated Risk: The Relationship Between Neighborhood Crimes and School Building–Level Outcomes

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between neighborhood violent crime and school-level academic performance. Using data combined from the Ohio Department of Education and the National Neighborhood Crime Study, we assess the effects of violent crime rates on both school performance and between-group gaps on demographics of policy relevance. Results show that murder rates negatively correlated with scores on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) for Black economically disadvantaged students.
