Building Cooperation Between Career and Technical Education Teachers and School Guidance Counselors

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

School Guidance Counselors (SGCs) have a large impact on which students enter and remain in CTE programs of study. However, SGCs and CTE teachers often don’t have the opportunity to forge cooperative relationships which could benefit students, CTE programs, and overall school programming. The purpose of this qualitative study was to create information regarding the impact of a cooperation based intervention on the interactions between CTE teachers working at career and technical education centers and SGCs working at comprehensive high schools which send students to those centers. The findings indicate that the intervention increased the SGCs enthusiasm for and their engagement with the CTE teacher and CTE program of study.
