Composing Uncertainty: The Evocative Writing Response as Dialogue and Disruption

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section B

Abstract

This visual presentation provides a theoretical reflection on the practice of evocative, dialogic writing feedback developed within a graduate level arts-writing course offered within a school of art and research-intensive university context. Examples of art and writing are shared, reflecting significant relationships that developed among students’ arts practices, artistic research, and peer and instructor responses to their writing. Theorized through Lacanian perspectives on writing instruction, the development of evocative feedback dialogues shows promise for facilitating growth in students’ composition skills and in their self-confidence about writing. Beyond the course, the evocative, dialogic feedback practice offers an expanded approach to composition grounded in the exploration of uncertainty, disruption, and reader response within the relational spaces of the visual-textual dialogue.
