This paper introduces a new, 2:1 co-teaching model of student teaching that seeks to change features of traditional student teaching that inhibit teacher candidate growth. The hierarchical nature of traditional teacher-candidate relationships can hinder collaboration, limit mentoring, and allow for primarily summative feedback. The 2:1 model provides a distinct departure from the traditional approach in that teachers and candidates become partners working together to provide instruction and effect change in the classroom. Additionally, feedback in co-teaching classrooms occurs earlier and more often in the teaching cycle, allowing for reflection and discourse between and among members of the team.
