The analysis is part of an inquiry into what kind of resources and constraints influences youth’s participation in a collaborative design effort addressing technology integration in schools. The paper addresses the tensions that arise as students become legitimate partners in the design of school practices, and examines ways to balance the need for student capacity development and valuing student voice during collaborative design and research work with students. An examination of one aspect of student development during collaborative inquiry with researchers, namely how the students shifted the way they positioned themselves in relation to school technology, suggests that student capacity development and agency mutually inform each other, demonstrating a further need to uncover practices that support both.
