Toward an Art-Based, Reflexive, and Multimodal Pedagogy for Global Citizenship Education

Abstract

Looking into Maxine Greene’s notion of “wide-awakeness,” we explored the possibility of art-based experiences such as Augusto Boal’s Image Theater in facilitating transformation of thinking in the context of global citizenship education (GCE). The objective of this research is threefold. First is to concretize the notion of aesthetic pedagogy into a practice-based theoretical model. Second is to provide case study examples of how this model was applied in two undergraduate-level courses with a global focus. Third is to pilot and field test an assessment rubric that may be used to systematically evaluate student thinking and learning through various art forms such as images. We also present a conceptual model for an Art-based, Reflective, and Multimodal Pedagogy.
