What Happens When the Artist Leaves? A Teacher Educator's Self-Study Following an Artist Residency

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom A

Abstract

Artist residencies partner professional artists working as teaching artists or artists in residence with teachers to develop and teach interdisciplinary curriculum. Teaching artist residencies have been implemented in the United States and Europe since at least the 1960’s but most of these residencies are relatively brief collaborations between a teaching artist and classroom teacher. Little research exists on the impact artist residencies have on classroom teachers once the residency ends. This self-study focused on one teacher educator’s attempts to take the insights and experiences gained from one residency and provide similar experiences to a new group of students. The abstract painting residency took place in a United States teacher education classroom.
