Students' Envy Predicted by Personal Control and Value Appraisals and Undeservingness Appraisals of Peer Grades

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Even though envy is considered a social achievement emotion, past research has investigated envy mostly in laboratory settings, without actual relational or achievement stakes. The present field study, however, examined predictors of envy among 7th to 10th grade students (N= 238). Envy was expected to be related to control and value appraisals concerning one’s own academic achievement, as well as appraisals concerning the achievement outcomes of others (Feather, 2006; Pekrun and Linnenbrink-Garcia, 2014). As expected, multiple regression analyses showed that personal achievement control and value appraisals, and appraisals of undeservingness of peer grades together predict envy. These findings stress the complex nature of the appraisal processes underlying social achievement emotions like envy.
