Organizing for Social Justice: Social Justice Caucuses and the Development of National Solidarity Networks

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the work of social justice caucuses within unions in the United States. Using observations at caucus meetings, document analysis of materials created by caucus members, and discourse analysis of interviews with caucus members, this study explores how social justice caucuses engage in local and national policy debates. As part of my dissertation research, this study focuses on the work of social justice caucuses in three major U.S. cities, exploring the linkages between these organizations to trace the development of solidarity networks among teachers throughout the United States. By investigating the work of social justice caucuses, this study will offer a better understanding of recent developments in the history of U.S. teachers’ unions.
